And were they charged an extra excess from their insurance company because Mazda First were involved, and if so how much? I realise in this instance I'll have to pay the agreed excess to our insurers but wonder ...

From the Settings icon select the 'AD-Disp' tab. One of the options is to turn off the Active Display indication. I think it leaves the combiner screen sticking up though; just doesn't display anything on it when set to Off.

The 2018 Owner's Manual shows the long eyelet is stored in a cutout specifically shaped to hold it, whereas the short one is just loose in a bag and tucked away. That's how it is in my 2015 too.

FYI - a new Q85 battery from a Mazda dealer should be £107.97 + VAT for the Petrol engine and £135.62 + VAT for a stop/start battery for the Diesel engine. Fitting is often free but check.
