As Andy says there was a bad batch of air con condensers, but that came to light early 2017 I think, so any faulty units should have been replaced by...

Neither. On my model there is a button behind the handbrake. Press it once and then every time you stop you can hold the footbrake on by putting a bit of extra pressure on the pedal. It will then stay on until you press the accelerator.
