Hi Peter Make sure the steering column stalks are in the correct position, just selecting AUTO on the twist selector ring isn't enough. Had that fault with mine, the sensor had come away from the screen after replacing twice which resolved the issue for a few days, the dealership realised it was the fixing on the screen which was at fault and was not replaceable. I don't think the new 3 is in the showrooms yet, I was chatting to the salesman in my dealership two weeks ago he said they can't get their hands,on one till the spring. It may have been a 2019 model you test drove but not the one with the latest engine .

Yes going along tomorrow the dealer has two automatics in stock, I will have a drive and check it out to see if mine is the same, rather than be told its OK.

No but if you are as obsessive about noises as me it would be a blessing if I was, because I wouldn't here them, because the hearing aids would come out before driving.
