Modern paints are more prone to damage as they are water based. Years ago in BL days they were celulose based so a lot harder. Just running your finger nail gently over a modern paint will mark it, hence why detailing is so popular these days.
It amazes me that people spend £000's on a car then take it to a cheap foreign hand car wash and get a wash with a sponge or cloth that has been on the ground, used on multiple cars, very strong chemicals used etc to do a quick job. Looks clean from a distance, but so much damage inflicted.
