How is TPMS affected by new tyres and valves?

Post by zoylander » Thu Sep 12, 2019 11:32 am

I don't understand the technicalities of TPMS , but I do know that some systems rely on special valves. Most tyre suppliers automatically fit standard valves with new tyres, so do I need to specify a particular type of valve when ordering my tyres? If so, which one?
I realise of course that the TPMS will have to be reset after the new tyres have been fitted.

What year is your CX-3? The current model does use special valves, but if it is prior to July 2018 (this date limit maybe be later that year) the TPMS uses the ABS sensors rather than special tyre valves. Check out the attached page 4-230 of that manual

Thank you for putting my mind at rest. My CX-3 was registered in July 2016, so now I know it should not need special tyre valves.

That's interesting Steve. My car was registered in January 2019 and I'm sure it has standard valves. I will check again in the morning, do the special valves look any different?

I only have a copy of a July 2018 Owner's Manual so that's why I picked that date in my original post. I thought special valves hadn't been introduced till later that year / early this year. So cars registered in late 2018 / early 2019 probably still use the ABS sensors for the TPMS rather than special tyre valves. I'm not sure if it is possible to tell if a valve is a special one used for the TPMS as it is the guts of the valve inside the tyre that contains the pressure sensing "stuff".

They normally re-use the old valve for the transmitter type of TPMS. They should just replace the "O" ring seals if needed.

My CX-3 is from August 2019 and the dealer told me that the TPMS are not in the valves but work via the ABS sensors.
So can I buy a set of winter wheels with normal valves?
