Does anyone know if it is correct to connect the battery conditioner directly to the battery terminals?
My other cars, a BMW and Jag both with IStop state not to connect this way as it somehow confuses the system.
You connect via the jump start terminal and any earth point.
Had an issue with the CX3 this Summer with the conditioner not working this time.

I don't think there's an official Mazda document about battery conditioners. I haven't used a conditioner/charger on my CX-3, but I'll offer this info in case it's of any help..

In the FAQ section at ctek.com (not CX-3 specific) they state: "You can connect a CTEK charger directly to the minus pole instead of to the chassis without any risk. CTEK recommends connecting the minus clamp to ground instead of the minus pole to eliminate the risk of sparking close to the battery. Explosive oxy-hydrogen gas could be found near the battery. However, CTEK chargers are non-sparking and with their smart charging, generate minimal oxy-hydrogen gas. There is therefore very little risk associated with connecting both clamps to the battery poles."

In Mazda TSB E010/15 about precautions when connecting/disconnecting the negative cable from the battery during any servicing work, they state that the cable must be removed in one smooth operation avoiding repeated momentary contact to the battery terminal that causes a small spark. Not following this precaution, they say, "may cause an excessive voltage variation to the Body Control Module (BCM) leading to electrical system malfunction(s)".

Thanks, mine is hardwired to the battery terminals with a plug for connecting so no risk of sparking.
I may try to connect via an earth bolt to see if this works.

As our batteries arent the sealed type, are we supposed to unscrew the caps on the tops of the battery when charging?

On page 6-38 of my Owner's Manual, it says:

"...Be sure to remove the caps before recharging the battery.
(With i-stop system) - Do not quick-charge the battery.
