Has anyone with an iPhone had their text messages displayed / read out on the infotainment unit?
Despite ticking the boxes, mine has remained resolutely silent

Yes, mine does.
On your iPhone, go to 'Settings', then tap 'Bluetooth'.
On the next screen, tap the i in a circle next to 'Mazda' in the 'My Devices' list.
On the next screen, ensure that 'Show Notifications' is turned on.
