I had a similar problem, it turned out to be a can of de-icing spray that had rolled under the front seat. I guess you have checked for anything under the seats or in the boot?

So... Yet to take it in to the dealer but it is definitly the AC compressor!

Switched AC off and no noise, tested it by ticking over with AC off, windows down so I can listen, first of all had AC too high a temp so the compressor didn't kick in when switched on but lowered the temp and switched AC on and *almost* immediately heard the noise - which might account for me thinking it was to do with pulling away - drove around with the window open and found I could hear the compressor kicking in and out and that's exactly the noise we were hearing!
So glad we now know what it is, I hate intermittent unknown faults.... If it is actually a fault?

Would be nice if anyone else here could perhaps try and replicate what I've found?
Just try ticking over with AC off and windows open so you can hear anything, turn temp to minimum and then press the AC button, within a few seconds you *might* hear the compressor kicking in - it's quite noticeable in my case.... I think there's also the same noise when I switched it off as well?

Oh yes, you can hear the compressor going on and off, that's normal.

Just something else to be obsessive about.....along with the seat slowly sinking for which I have jammed with a piece of 1"x 1" timber with a V in the end. the dealer was not that helpful with a fix, there have been a couple of posts on it.
Sorry if you now notice yours doing it
