The average annual ownership cash costs of running my CX 3 for it's first year of ownership are as follows
Car tax=£140
Annual service=£166( a third of a 3 year £500 plan )
Insurance=£240
Petrol( 5652 miles over 12 months) =£660 (£55 a month)
This totalling up at £1206.
How much should I factor in for the biggest cost of all-depreciation?

25% for the first year then approx 10% each year after.

I think that's a good rule of thumb guide. I believe the average is 50% after five years, so Andy's formula stacks up.
A Citroen will probably depreciate a little more, but Andy can confirm that later  Sorry Andy couldn't resist.

Taken from motoringresearch.com

Smart styling, agile handling and a practical cabin have won the CX-3 plaudits from UK motoring media. And buyers seem to agree; Mazda’s crossover retains 73.7% of its initial purchase price, costing £5,170 in depreciation.

The figures given are for 3 years and 30,000 miles.

Unfortunately those figures don't really stack up. Maybe if you looked at sales figures it would be closer, but in real terms I would use Andy's formula.

Believe me Strangways, this decision has been made out of necessity not desire. The old Land Rover 90 needs a new chassis for the MOT, I knew it was coming, the new owner intends to rebuild it on a galvanised chassis, something that is beyond me. If I could afford to keep the Mazda I would, but I can't hence the need to change. There is very little out there for 30k that has a boxy boot. Most cars has a sloping rear window that won't work for me, so Citroën it is. If the lottery ever comes up I would have another CX-3 purely for its driving characteristics and build quality.

when we picked up our cx3 last May , we were told that the trade in price of cx3's had risen higher than any other car, probably a sales pitch but good for us if not..

That's a real shame Andy. And if I win the Euro Millions tonight I will buy you another CX-3.

If you have bought new i would agree.

I bought a demo model 3 months old with 2400 miles on the clock and it has lost me less than 12% over the first 12 months i have owned it.

Depreciation? Ah there's a question.

I've been looking at buying a new AWD CX-3 current list £26115 my current AWD CX-3 is 17000 miles on a 15 plate July 2015 to be exact. 43 months old.

The highest trade-in was £13200 and the lowest £12500

So for 43 months; I'll use the current selling price as that accounts for inflation; £26115-13200/43m =£300.34 per month.

And that's £10 a day depreciation! Or taking my 17000 miles into account, the cost per mile in depreciation was 76 pence.

I did use CarWow to set up two dealers to compete with me as the go between and managed 6.9% off list for an outright purchase; more if you buy on PCP but then your total payment for credit is higher.

All the figures above assume the rate of fall is static but I think the rate falls rapidly at first and tails off over the life of the car.

The dealer who offered £13200 on the car did say if I went for a factory order he would guarantee my car value at 12500 in 16 weeks time (delivery). That gives a depreciation of £6.25 / day. Which agrees with my above assumption.

From my lengthy discussions I think dealers are working on a 20% margin for resale so my £13200 trade in would be on the forecourt, looking to sell at retail £15840.
Mazda paint is crap! Mazda should be ashamed of themselves!.
