The dealer confirmed as I started to explain he stopped me and told what the problem was I was having, he has had many owners with the same problem
Well, that's a stupid state of affairs then. If you don't want to carry two wheel braces around, you could get an extending wheel brace that has a reversible 17/19mm socket on the end, e.g. Telescopic Wheel Wrench and get Mazda UK to pay for it.

(Although, thinking about it, that may not work if the Mazda wheel brace also acts as a jack handle as it does on mine).

I think I have space to put a second wrench around the wheel, we will see on Monday when I collect it and hopefully glean some knowledge if and when Mazda Tech ring me.
Thanks for your help, will keep you updated

Not that it will be of any real help, but for the record:

My CX-3 with 18" wheels has 21mm wheel nuts and 21mm locking wheel nuts. All original Mazda.

Needed to remove a wheel yesterday and guess what- 21mm wheel nuts and the locking nut key is 17mm. Contacted the dealer who is sending me a set of 21mm locking wheel nuts / key. I believe it's the dealers that fit the locking nuts onto the new vehicles. So how does a technician fit a locking nut that is smaller than the nut he has just taken off ?????
