Have a read of the above thread and particularly the last post by Pro10is commenting on 'percieved' carbon build up of the Skyactive engine.

I think possibly Chad has been very unlucky with an early failure\fault of the emmisions system.
Modern day diesels of any manufacturer are all susceptable to similar emmision system problems especially if only driven short distances, even petrol models have egr's that recycle exhaust fumes back into the inlet manifolds.

I had exactly the same problem on my previous car - a Mitsubishi ASX diesel. 20000 miles and she ground to a halt with the engine light on and no power. The car was taken to a Mitsubishi dealer who informed me that the EGR valve and inlet manifold was sooted up and blocked. It was all cleaned out and I was back on the road 1 week later. However, when I took the car some weeks after to my local garage for its first MOT, I told the mechanic the story. He looked at me and said 'supermarket fuel'. Apparently, they have quite a few diesels coming in all with the same problem. He was absolutely definite in that it was the fuel that was the problem, coupled with the appalling design of the exhaust gas (soot) coming back round to the engine, courtesy of the EGR valve. Incredibly bad design. I got rid of the Mitsubishi soon after and bought my CX-3 and she has not had a drop of supermarket fuel ever. Engine runs beautifully and I for one will never return to a diesel engine.

Incidentally, Shell V power unleaded now has an octane of 99. I now use this all the time and my CX-3 absolutely loves it with increased MPG too!
I'd rather run out of fuel than use supermarket shite.

Chad wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2019 1:40 pm @Jtonline No, I bought it used.
Was just curious, as when buying used there is no knowledge of how it's been looked after before the previous owner got rid.
Mine's done over 50,000m and (touching lucky rabbit's foot to wooden desk) I've not had any engine problems so far. That's not meant as a boast, just that yours seems like an early failure.

There is also a known issue with the diesel injectors having a faulty spray pattern on some early CX-3's. I don't have access to the details at the moment but I'll check later, and may not be pertinent to yours anyway. If suspected, the garage removes the injectors, checks with Mazda UK and if necessary orders replacement parts and then refits.

Perhaps the previous owner did lots of short stop/start journeys...

Is the car under a Mazda warranty?

Yes, the car is still under Mazda warranty. The mechanic informed me that the injectors on mazdas do cause carbon build up, as well as the EGR valve.
The previously owner only did around 6k a year and so this will have been all town driving. And very probably supermarket fuel. I live about 300 yards away from an Esso garage so I have always run my cars in this. Whilst it’s understood that Low grade fuel can cause problems no car should need major repairs at 20k miles!!

If they're going to strip down, check EGR valve & do a carbon clean, ask them to check the injectors too, as per Mazda Repair Guidance R032/17, issued to authorised repairers May 22 2017:

Japan Built Europe L. H.D. & UK Spec.
VIN Range: JMZ DK **** **100043 - 999999 Feb. 10, 2015 - 9999/99 /99
Thailand Built UK Spec.
VIN Range: MMZ DK **** **109099 - 999999 Mar. 15, 2016 - 9999 /99 /99
may have improper spray of fuel. If so, replacement parts are
S560-13-H50 INJECTOR x 4
S550-13-112 GASKET, EGR PIPE x 1 Intake Manifold Side
S551-20-318 GASKET, EGR PIPE x 1 HP-EGR Control Valve Side

I have been told by Freelance Mazda that there are very big issues with the current diesel units and you may find this article of interest - okay it is on the other side of the planet - but still the same issues..

A quick Google shows Mazda Australia have recalled 35,000 diesel models - 3, 6 and CX-5's between 2012-2018, but no mention of the CX-3??! Due to carbon build up of the intake -

“The affected vehicles may accumulate carbon deposits in the intake shutter valve, in addition to premature wear of certain engine components,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said.

I think anyone concerned should contact their dealer and mention this recall. :( :?

Ah!.... Just found the issue - It's to do with 'cylinder de-activation technology' which I don't think will impact our market?

There is a UK safety recall for intake shutter valve inspection checks for soot accumulation that could cause the engine to stall, and a PCM software update is carried out, but not for the CX-3. A number of users over on anchorman's Facebook CX-5 group have had it done.
