My husband was locked in the car yesterday and I can't work out why.

I changed the battery on both key fobs in May this year (I have only owned the car since March 2020).

Yesterday we stopped to get petrol. We both got out of the car and I had the key in my pocket. He went inside to buy a paper and I stayed at the car to refuel. The doors locked almost immediately after we both got out. I filled the car (I was never away from the car) and when my husband came back I used the fob to open the car to let him get in. He got in.
When he tried to open the door to give me something he found the doors locked and he was unable to get out using the manual handles inside the car. I had to use the fob to open the car so he could get out. A bit worrying as if there had been an emergency he would have been trapped. All this time I was standing adjacent to the car.

I've tried Googling this but the manual is way over complicated with all the possible settings and I haven't changed anything so what could be the problem? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks

This may or may not be connected but a few weeks ago I lost the speed limit signs on the pop up screen in the cabin. I went into the settings to see what might be the problem but didn't change anything. The speed limit sign came back a little while later. Main A and B roads so not off map.

Your key fob was not close enough to the keyless entry aerials in the car so the car locked itself. The deadlocks then engage so you can't open the car from the inside (so a thief can't just break a window and reach in to unlock the car with the knob on the inside of the door). If you leave someone in the car, always leave the key fob with them so they can't be locked in.

What if I make a mistake and the car catches fire? How does my passenger escape?

If you’re concerned, you will have to turn off the convenience of walk-away locking in the settings, so that it doesn’t lock without you pressing a button.

Ah thanks. I didn't realise I could do this. I'll get the manual out again.

I quite often lock the wife in the car for the same "unintentional" reason. And she can't sit still and so sets the alarm off so I have to let her out.
