Using fob key

I just changed the fob battery and it occurred to me that I had never used the door key to see if it worked. I happily went to my car, put the key in the door and turned it. Sure enough the door unlocked but the alarm sounded, I switched it off somehow with the fob, but it struck me, what if the fob battery had been flat. As I understand it, that is the reason for the key.

You've forgotten that you've tried out your key in the past and posted then that the alarm sounded (Aug 2019).
It's normal for the alarm to go off if you use the auxiliary key. The alarm will stop when you start the car, which can be done even if the key fob battery has died.
