Hi all, twice in the past two weeks I have unlocked my car using the door button, opened the back door and set my bag containing my keys on the back seat (as I have done since I bought the car), closed the back door and..........the car has locked itself - with the keys and my phone inside. Nightmare! Even my house keys were in the car.
Fortunately both times a friend has been near and they have driven me home so that I could collect the spare key to unlock the car again. What is going on? I thought that the car was supposed to be unable to lock when the keys have been inside?

A possibility is that the battery in the key fob is getting weaker and is not being picked up due to the distance of the receiver and therefore dosen't think the keys are in the car.

There is a note in the Owner's Manual that the car may lock if the key is in an area of the car where it's not detected or with a mobile phone. Its operational range will also be reduced as the fob battery charge depleats over time.

Thank you all. I thought it might be battery related. Can I replace the battery myself or do I need to go to a Mazda dealership?

You can do it yourself and it's very easy.
Just look in the manual, it has very good how-to.

As santa says, and there are videos on YouTube if that helps, e.g.
A main dealer would probably want an arm and a leg to do it for you.
A twin pack of big name lithium CR2025 batteries is easily obtainable for a couple of pounds.

A main dealer wanted to charge me £19 when my car was in for an annual service 2 years ago  I declined. I bought the battery and spent no more than 5 minutes changing it myself for less than a couple of £ even if I costed my time  If I ran a dealership I'd replace them for free as part of a service and absorb the cost for better customer relations etc. Don't think it would make me go bust

OK-just how long DO Mazda key fob batteries actually last?
I only comment as such since I just happened to be in a Timpsons a few weeks ago and mentioned I was suspicious of my key fob battery and they did it on the spot for a quid or three--next time I'll do my own.

I think it depends on how much you use it. Mine isn't an everyday car as I have the MX5, so I change mine every two years which hasn't caused me a problem as yet.
