Had my car serviced last Tuesday at a Mazda dealer. On checking the oil level yesterday - car parked on a level surface and after a short run to warm up the oil - I noticed it is probably 5-6mm above the full mark on the dipstick. It's not the first time I've had this after a service by a dealer. I have phoned the dealer and arranged for the car to be dropped off with them on Tuesday to check it out but I expect they'll probably try to fob me off like last time with it's only a little over the full mark etc etc. I have rechecked the level today with the engine cold and it's at least the same reading, if not marginally higher. Am I worrying unnecessarily about this situation?

I don't think 5-6mm over the full mark when warm is worth worrying about on the petrol engine; the X mark (point above full when the oil must be changed due to dilution) on the diesels is higher up the dipstick than that. If it's going in on Tuesday, they could drain a bit off to bring the level between low and full.

Many thanks for your reply JT. Out of interest I see the diesel engine has an oil capacity (including the oil filter) of 5.1 litres compared to 4.2 litres for the petrol one. Presumably that must mean the sumps are different sizes on both engines - I have found the part number for the petrol engine but can't find it for the diesel engine - so I can't tell if the oil would be resting at the same level within both. I take your point about the x mark on the diesel dipstick. I have got a manual vacuum oil extractor pump gizmo for extracting fluids so will give it a go tomorrow as it might save a trip to the dealer :) Will post an update in due course.

Update: I managed today to successfully syphon off enough oil to bring the reading back to spot on the full mark :D So dealer visit now cancelled. Whilst I was on a roll I also did the same for the coolant level which has been well above the full mark since it must have been over-filled by the dealer at some point. It is now just below the full mark :D Both tasks made more complicated by Mazda decision to include some kind of baffling between the top of the dipstick hole and coolant cap and the underlying liquid surfaces :x

Update 2: 5-6mm over the full mark on a petrol engine dipstick equates to 0.5 litres per the receptacle it was syphoned in. That’s just over 10% of the engine’s total capacity 😫 So anyone in the same situation I’d recommend it needs resolving and don’t let the garage fob you off about it.
