Because it's all CAN bus technology, you have to send signals through control modules and electrical supply units to get a light to switch on/off these days, so no, it's probably not simple.
Also, ever watched an Audi with the turn indicator on? The DRL on the indicating side turns off.
That's in the legislation somewhere too, if the DRL is in close proximity to a turn signal.

I find someone's brake lights far worse than DLRs.

It makes sense on cars whose indicators are next to the DLR's to have that side go out when indicating.

It should be quite easy I suppose
I have an Audi Q5 as our second car and switching on the rear LEDs to come as as part of the DRL system was just a 5min code change using a diagnostic cable

This is the first car I have owned with DLRs-I can't quite get used to the need.
I can easily tell if I need lights in the daytime and in every other previous car I have owned have been perfectly capable of switching them on or off according to weather, time of day etc.
Yesterday though, I felt uncomfortable seeing the DLRs reflected back at me when stuck in sunny traffic and wondered if there was the option to switch them off? Is there please? ( where in the handbook can I find the option?)-or is it wise to just leave them?
I can see sense in seeing and in being seen.
What do other owners do or think?

No you can't turn them off. Personally I think it should include the rear lights, just like Volvo have done for years.

I don't understand why anyone would object to the introduction of DRL's, and like alanandlyn, would prefer them to also include the tail lights.

Studies that have evaluated the effects of using DRL for cars have found a reduction of the number of accidents.

DRLs make a car more visible to nutters coming towards you overtaking on stupid stretches of road. Absolutely DISAGREE about the need for them. Had a Volvo in the nineties with them - brilliant idea!

That post makes no sense as you're contradicting yourself.

Sure, without them people can choose to turn lights on, but they make the wrong choice. You just have to see how many don't use any lights in fog during the day, or put rear fog lights on and then don't turn them off days later, despite the dashboard warning light. As DRL's prevent accidents, why make a driver have to press a button to turn them on every time they start the car, when the car can do it automatically?
