Any suggestions on best way to remove the chalky residue from the black plastic trim eg wheel arches?

A soft pencil eraser. Then, once you've removed the white residue, follow up with Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel.
Detailers will normally mask off black plastic trim before polishing, but if you're careful you can avoid having to do so.

Yep, a detailer friend of mine swears by walnut oil.

Autoglym suggest using the fast glass or intensive tar remover from their range.

Just a thought..... there are better polishes/sealants out there that don't mark the trim. Autoglyn Super Resin polish is slighty abrasive, I have some but only use it locally to rectify marks in the paint which don't require a scratch remover.
As JT says if you like to use it best mask up using the low tack blue masking tape which doesn't leave any residue behind.

I've alway just gone over the marks with AutoGlym bumper gel... But now use Black to the Future as suggested by GrumpyDad and gotta say, after several weeks it shows no signs of fading 👍
