Can anyone enlighten me on why for no reason the dashboard lights go from Bright to dim when driving, lights are on auto

There is a light sensor in the unit behind the rear view mirror. When the ambient light drops below a preset level the headlights will come on (when set to Auto) and your dashboard lights will dim. When the ambient light increases the reverse happens.

This can happen during the day when travelling through areas of shade, e.g. tree cover. The trigger level can be set via the infotainment screen.

You can cancel the dashboard dimming by rotating the top right stalk in the instrument cluster to maximum brightness, confirmed by a beep. That's useful if you want to drive during the day with your headlights on, e.g. in fog.
