I have finally got around to invalidating my warranty and taking the Head Unit out. I'd installed FW version 59.00.502 before it was known it prevented All-In-One Tweaks working and locked user access. So a serial connect to a laptop and a bit of fiddling and I was in and tweaking the system!

Initially I tried Smart MZD Player that uses a USB memory stick to facilitate Android Auto and playing videos on the head unit ,should you need it, (when parked of course). That was OK and works quite well.

Today, I've just installed the AIO Tweaks version of Android Auto.

For those asking is it worth it, I found the voice control -pressing the talk button on the steering wheel and saying "Navigate to Billingshurst" the bees knees. Cancelling navigation is always a pain but now - talk button + "cancel navigation" does the business.

Android Auto contrast is a bit wishy-washy but with voice guidance and large clear next step navigation hints it works well enough. The display resolution on these cars is a bit cheap for 2018 at 800x400. Some say the Waze contrast is better - yet to try that.

What is missing are navigation hints in the Head-up Display.

A warning for anyone considering removing the infotainment unit from the dashboard; I'm led to believe that it has some sharp edges and so it's advisable to cover the dashboard to avoid any scratches as you manhandle the unit in and out of its hole. Better safe than sorry.

For those interested in removing the head unit, if you've updated to 59.00.502 or beyond, a how-to for a Mazda 2 is shown here https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.ph ... &t=5079741
It's in Chinese or similar but the pictures tell it all.

And making a serial connection with attendant fiddling to get access for tweaks is here https://mazdatweaks.com/serial/

Out of interest talking to the dealer yesterday, Car Play/Android Auto can be retrofitted by the dealer into a CX-3, cost £350.00 as DrewUK has indicated, firmware is upgraded to 70.xx and the SD-Card/usb unit is replaced in its entirety. The dealer has already done two cars so it is available now if desired.

Hello. Just joined and glad I did.

We have just recently got a new 2018 CX-3 Sport that has two USB sockets with the SD card slot. Does this still need to be upgraded by a dealer to use CarPlay etc.? Or would I be able to download and upgrade the Firmware? It is OS version59.00.504.

Thanks

This could get interesting because I believe Android Auto will work with just the latest download NOT Car Play but I am waiting for someone to either confirm this or debunk it as a myth.
