Although aware of the risks, our CX-3 was astonishingly good as it made it through a long stretch of 8 inch deep floodwater yesterday. Simply dropped it into 1st, maintained high revs whilst slipping the clutch, then drove steadily through it to avoid water riding up into the engine bay and penetrating the air intake. Thank goodness we went for a manual gearbox.

The orange BMW behind us however wasn't as successful and conked out half way. Ouch.

PS Also impressed with the CX-3's ability to handle the two lots of snow we had last month. For a 2-wheel drive with standard Toyo tyres, it tackled 4 to 5 inches reasonably well - with enough torque from the 2.0L to steadily ascend inclines in 4th & 5th (although there were a few scary moments).

(a) I wouldn’t of risked it

(b) Auto wouldn’t of made any difference, you have total control of whatever gear selected

Well done Geejam! But if I didn't know the road I don't think I would have risked it!

Whilst working for BT a colleague drove through a (very) large puddle to find the guard rails for road excavation had been washed away and his escort van ended up at a 45 deg angle with the bonnet completely under water and the rear wheels in the air! Bossman was *not* impressed :o

I would certainly trust the CX-3 more than our (ex) Gtd in snow - the Gtd was impossible to drive, I kept a pack of Autosocks in the boot 'just in case' but never had the opportunity to use them, as we would prefer my old Combo van that is more than happy in several inches of snow due to the much thinner tyres of course.

As for auto/manual box, can't comment as never owned an auto.

I don't think the issue is selecting 1st gear, it is more about slipping the clutch to keep the revs up to stop water getting in the exhaust.
