I've just booked a date for the refurbishment of my five alloy wheels at a local company. The wheels are not kerb damaged but have corroded in various places.

They are going to:-

Remove the tyres & balance weights;
acid strip and steam clean to remove existing coatings;
sand blast & air line clean;
mask up the rear mating area of the wheel where it mounts to the hub of the car;
preheat in oven to 200°C to prepare them for powder coating, then remove from oven;
apply a high build powder coat primer & return to oven to cure, then remove from oven;
wet paint in Mercedes-Benz 'Himalaya Grey' & then another cure in the oven;
apply a powder coat acrylic crystal clear lacquer to give a glass like appearance, and finally;
put the tyres back on and balance.

I'm not going to get the original diamond cut finish. Really looking forward to seeing the end result.
Julian.

The cost, £75 per wheel.
I'll happily post up some pics in a couple of week's time :)

Gosh-that’s quite expensive!…but I agree , there’s nothing better than 4 ace looking wheels.
What tyre black dressing will you use or will you be like me and just scrub the rubber like hell with an old washing up brush dipped in washing up soap then rinse?

I think the price is quite reasonable, obviously. It would have been £10 a wheel cheaper if they didn't have to remove & replace the tyre on each and rebalance.

I don't usually dress the tyres, but I do have a bottle of Autoglym High Performance Tyre Gel in a cupboard, so I may apply a bit of that. 8-)

That's a good price...if you had gone to diamond cut it would have been a lot more.

Yes, and in my experience it's the diamond cut areas, that only have a layer of lacquer, that are more prone to corrosion.

I don't think that's too bad a price either. It was £50 a wheel many moons ago for reburb of the black enamel ones on a Corsa.

I had my Audi wheels sorted out not so long ago and they were a lot steeper than £75 each. However, they're also very wide and big diameter and about 8 years more corroded than my Mazda. I am buying a full sized spare in order to cater for a possible refurb as well as having the luxury of a like for like spare which allows me to continue with 4 tyres of the same size and pattern. Smart wheels are quite important to my overall satisfaction. I have curbed or corroded the paint off wheels in the past and it might be safe but it looks horrible and lets down the overall appearance.
