My Mum has just bought a 68 plate Mazda CX-3 2.0 petrol AWD manual and noticed this evening the lights were still on, I couldn't see the state of the car myself but I suspect she's accidentally knocked it from auto to sidelights which seems to keep the lights on when the car is off. I have a li-ion battery pack I use to jump start cars with dead batteries but wanted to make sure is there any problem using such a device with a newer car like the CX-3? I'm assuming not and I can't find much on the subject on this forum while a general google search returns various horror stories about killing modern cars by jump starting them so thought I'd just double check.

Just while I'm here when the car parked up should the handbrake be activated manually before switching off or is it meant to activate itself when the engine is switched off? She's been doing it manually but I can't remember now if the sales person had said it automatically came on itself.

Thanks for any advice.

There's a section in the Owner's Manual about jump starting. See extract below.
The Electronic Parking Brake does not auto-engage.
You can download a PDF copy of the Owner's Manual from https://www.mazda.co.uk/owners/videos-and-manuals/ which will help you to assist your Mum with her new purchase.

Thanks for the response on both points. I thought that was the case with the handbrake but wanted to double check she wasn't doing something wrong as it's not something I'm familiar with.

That's a handy snippet from the manual so I'll keep a hold of that although thankfully I didn't need it this time as the car has been starting fine.
