The cabin is just about big enough for four adults, although taller occupants are likely to complain about legroom if they're confined to the rear seats for longer journeys. The boot is respectable, at 350 litres, but no more than that; this remains a jacked-up supermini, not a car that can match a conventional five-door family hatch on practicality.

It can match plenty of them on interior finish, though; there are enough nice flourishes, including padded, double-stitched material on the fascia and the door linings, for the CX-3 to look a step above the Captur and well clear of the old-school Juke on perceived quality.

Small crossovers remain a curious creation; they're frequently more expensive than their supermini cousins (quite a bit more so, in the case of the CX-3) and no more practical.

However, the CX-3 does feel like one of the most rounded offerings in the category yet. It's decent to drive, nicely finished and well specced; for those style-focused customers drawn in by its chunky looks, it could well prove to be a very pleasing purchase.
