A Mazda2-based crossover is due later this year, a Japanese report said.

The vehicle would be timed for this summer's expected redesign of the Mazda2, Japan's Nikkei business daily reported Sunday, without saying where it got the information.

Mazda declined to comment, calling the report speculative.

The Mazda2-based crossover would slot below the current CX-5 and initially be sold only in Japan, the Nikkei reported. Sales would eventually expand to Europe and emerging markets, it said.

The article didn't mention plans for North America.

At least their styling isn't as confused as Honda's - now there is a company desperately in need of a new design direction. The main issue with the Japanese companies are their ancient management teams, they are old and out of touch - their models are only ever evolutionary each model cycle.

From what I have read the new 1.5 SkyActiv diesel engine is a little gem - 250nm of torque. :-) For me personally I don't need the space but I need the flexible use of space and the new CX3 could be just right for me.

My only concern, with the CX-3, is a new Mexican factory, producing a brand new product, using brand new, inexperienced workers.
