As others have said, I read on a website it was the 11th character of the VIN which will signify the plant where the vehicle has been made. However on another site I found it suggests the 11th and 12th characters signify the assembly plant and that the values for the Japanese plants are 00 for Hiroshima and 01 for Hofu. Mine is 01 so guess it must be Hofu :) But if it is only the 11th character then that being 0 would suggest Hiroshima. Confused lol.

I've just come across a Mazda document about the VIN for general RHD spec., so I thought I'd dig up this old thread and update it:

1,2,3: World manufacturer identification (JM6 = Japan-Mazda)
4,5: Carline series (DK = Mazda CX-3)
6: Drive axle (2 = 2WD, 4 = 4WD)
7: Body style (W = Wagon)
8: Engine type (7 = 2.0L SKYACTIV-G, S = 1.5L SKYACTIV-D)
9: Transmission Type (6 = Manual, A = Automatic)
10: Model year or calendar year or blank (F = 2015, G = 2016, * = Blank)
11: Plant (0 = Hiroshima, 1 = Hofu)
Remaining numbers are an individual serial number.

Just checked my car's VIN on the My Mazda mobile app and it has different characters in positions 3,6 and 10 compared to the above. Will check it on car in due course to see if the app is showing the correct information.

Same on mine.
Just checked my registration papers and it has the same VIN as the app.

Hmm... There's a "European (L.H.D. U.K.) specs." section which shows

3: Z
6: Drive Axle (5 or 6 = 2WD and E or F = 4WD)
10: Dummy

Which, on checking, matches the format of my own VIN. Sorry for any confusion. I was thrown by L.H.D. in the document section heading.

Thanks :-)
Now it makes sense.
For some reason they have ditched the manufacturing year in the VIN for L.H.D.

No problem. Thanks for the clarification. Wonder if the Japanese think their cars are L.H.D. :) Seems strange that the UK VIN has to have 2 different numbers for 2WD and 2 different letters for AWD. Plus why they've done away with a year letter or number.

My new CX3 (details to follow!) has VIN starting MMZ. Any idea where it was manufactured and how can I check that it is a 2017 build? Any ideas would be very welcome

MMZ is the WMI (World Manufacturer Identification) code for Thailand-Mazda. You may have a W at position 11 which denotes the AAT (Auto Alliance Thailand) manufacturing plant. Can't help you with build date.

Defo a Thai build. There should be a plate affixed on the lower part of the frame visible when you open the drivers door , with the VIN number and the Month/Year of build.
