Recently got pranged in the rear end by a neighbour reversing into our rear bumper at a fair ole' rate - enough to push our car a good metre or so even with the handbrake on! - it was 7.30 am we were still in bed (Ahhhh retirement ) and the car was unocupied and parked right outside our house (we have the prang on video from security cameras) the only damage was a reversing sensor pushed into the bumper cavity... I was expecting to see a large crack or paint damage at least on the (already replaced a few years ago) bumper - but nothing! Sensor replaced, neighbour paid and all good.... until yesterday when my wife asked me if the car has an alarm...."Course it has" I said.... "then why didn't it go off when it was rear ended the other day???"...... A VERY good question!
Any clues???
We have the 'Advanced Keyless Entry System' set to lock doors automatically when we walk away and now reading the online manual I'm having doubts as to whether it sets the alarm 'fully'...and not sure if it also sets the 'double door lock' feature? I've read and re-read what I think are the relevant paragraphs (once I actually found what I was looking for - Bono from U2 springs to mind!) and seem to be going round in circles..... BUT... Should the alarm have sounded when the car is unoccupied and gets shunted down the road? My guess is YES, but then my wife says I'm often wrong
I guess this would depend on the actual alarm fitted. Some have sensors which detect movement in the cabin if a window is smashed. Some have tilt sensors in case some skilled tea leaves decide they want to load your pride and joy on to a recovery truck. I believe impact damage will only set off certain alarms.
No the alarm only detects the doors/bonnet/hatchback being opened or a movement inside the car triggering the ultrasonic sensors.

My partner bought her ID.3 on the 31st October, and the last two nights we’ve had the alarm sound without any obvious cause. It’s parked roadside outside our flat. We’ll check out the boot closing and the pressing of the ignition button - thanks for the tips. Also going to talk to the dealer today if we can and see if they have ideas. Does anyone know if it’s possible to dig into the car’s software and see which of the sensors caused the alarm? Might help track down the issue...
