1000 rpm what is wrong with you? Performance needs to start at 3000 rpm or above!

I drive on a lot of back roads, drop down to 2nd or 3rd regularly for cornering - and then shift straight to 6th once I hit the desired speed

Is the right answer.................Just use the performance when you need it and chill out at other times .

Not good to get used to that. Don't even try. Just be in the right gear for the circumstances you are in. Forget trying to move up a gear unless you are just cruising.

I have been getting between 43 and 44 MPG ( US Galons ) today over about 25 miles mostly in auto gear lots of hill and corners. averaging 40 / 45 KPH.
We have to be carefull on stating the US Galons and / or the Imperial gallons.
I dont have a lead foot, also I just crunched my milage numbers to arive at those milage numbers i also have been converting the metric over IE one USG = 3.78 ltrs & 1 Km = 0.62 miles.


Please do not be offended i don't advise driving at 1,000 RPM as that is barely abouve idle RPM .To make my point
I would not let my car idle at 1,000 RPM for hours on end in the drive.
those engines like to be worked around 2.800 rpm from time to time you could run an engine at 3600 RPM for long periods on the highway.

Because you are putting unnecessary strain, due to additonal power, through the front wheels which are trying to steer the car.

At best you wear the tyres out more quickly, at worst you risk losing control. Any driver, including a racing driver, is taught to break and accelarate only in a straight line.

I can't see anywhere where he said he was changing gear during cornering? Anyway, it makes little difference in a modern car where the chassis stability systems will compensate for poor or aggressive cornering and you certainly shouldn't lose control as this is what it's designed to stop.
